Residential door hardware brand Kwikset recently announced the launch of its Halifax Occupancy Indicator Lever, a privacy solution designed to help families, guests and customers avoid awkward bathroom interruptions.
The unit combines the brand’s contemporary Halifax lever with an easy-to-see red-green (vacant-occupied) indicator for homes and small businesses.
“Privacy should be simple and stress-free, especially in the spaces we share every day,” said Amanda Archer, group manager of product marketing at Kwikset. “With the Halifax Occupancy Indicator Lever, we’re combining a clean, contemporary design with a clear visual cue that helps families and businesses avoid interruptions and create a better bathroom experience for everyone.”

Part of Kwikset’s top-selling Halifax lever family, the new occupancy indicator handle makes it easy to see when a bathroom is vacant or in use. An indicator on the exterior of the lever displays red when locked and green when unlocked. Visible from up to 40 feet away, the indicator allows users to know before they knock, reducing second-guessing in busy households and business spaces, the brand says.
“The Halifax Occupancy Indicator Lever is ideal for multigenerational homes, Jack and Jill bathrooms and families with children or teenagers sharing a schedule,” says Kwikset, part of the ASSA ABLOY Group Company. “It also enhances the bathroom experience in small-business environments, including restaurants, dental offices, salons and leasing offices, where visible privacy can help clients and employees feel more comfortable.”
Kwikset says it has tested the unit to withstand 500,000 opening and closing cycles and that it is certified Grade AAA by BHMA for security, durability and finish. As a result, the lever is ideal for high-traffic areas and frequent use. The company also claims that the premium chassis keeps the lever straight and wobble-free over time, enhancing strength and smooth rotation.

Designed for simple installation, the reversible lever fits standard doors 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inches thick, with an adjustable latch that accommodates 2 3/8- or 2 3/4-inch backsets. All necessary hardware and instructions are included. To help avoid accidental lockouts, the lever includes a release tool that unlocks the door from the outside. Users may also open the door with a small flathead screwdriver.
“The Halifax design features sleek lines and a smooth, straight handle, adding a modern edge to contemporary and transitional interiors,” Kwikset says. Available in satin nickel and matte black finishes, the lever features built-in Microban antimicrobial product protection, which helps inhibit the growth of bacteria on the product surface, keeping door hardware cleaner between cleanings.
Halifax Occupancy Indicator Lever is available at The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Amazon and other major retailers, with prices starting at $48.
