Modern Mill, which manufactures composite siding made from upcycled rice hulls, has announced the introduction of a shingle siding panel that has been engineered to capture the classic look of cedar shingles while eliminating the weathering, rot and maintenance of real wood.
The company says its ACRE Perfection Shingle Siding brings its signature durability to a timeless style. ACRE panels resist water, weather, splintering and pests, and require no resealing over time. The company claims it is the only stainable composite shingle on the market. As a result, it accepts stain evenly, with no knots, sap lines or tannin bleed to work around, the company says.

“We believe ACRE shouldn’t just replace wood, we believe it should surpass it on every level,” said Matt Tevelde, executive vice president of national sales for Modern Mill. “Shingle siding is one of the most popular profiles in the country and adding it to the ACRE lineup is one of the most significant product updates in our company’s history.”
Modern Mill shook up the exterior siding category in 2022 when it officially introduced ACRE siding, an wood-alternative composite product that offers the look of wood but without all the maintenance hassles and weather-related issues, such as splitting, checking and warping.
ACRE siding is manufactured from upcycled rice hulls combined with a PVC-based resin. The company says it is highly resistant to splintering, rot or pests. Since the initial release, the Mississippi-based manufacturer has continued to expand the ACRE siding line. Today, Modern Mill offers a variety of siding options, including board and batten, nickel gap, V groove and more. It also offers trim pieces and fencing products.

The Perfection Shingle panels measure 4 feet long and a 5/16 inch thickness. It also measures almost 12 inches wide and has a 5 ⅞-inch reveal. It’s available pre-finished, including the company’s collection of seven stain colors Biloxi, Walnut, Amory, Laurel, Montauk Gray, Mahogany, and ACRE Black. The finishes are applied using IR reflective stain technology developed in partnership with PPG.
Panels and siding also come raw/unfinished and can be both painted or stained. “Compared to wood it holds stains and paints better, not needing yearly maintenance or any resealing,” says Connor McKenzie, Modern Mill communications manager.
