TileBar, a digitally native and omnichannel retailer and distributor of high-end tile, has unveiled its newest collection, The Slate Collection.
“Expertly crafted from a unique blend of volcanic ash or clay, the tiles offer exceptional durability while reflecting the raw and organic beauty of natural design,” the company says. “The composition of the tile not only creates a unique layered appearance but also imbues durability for optimum weather and break resistance, making it the perfect option for outdoor usage or within high-traffic indoor spaces.”
The collection is available in three colorways, Brazilian Black, India Black and California Gold, with configuration options from 2-by-2-inch squares to 24-by-24-inch slabs. Each is textured with organic slits and cuts and embraces the beauty of nature.

TileBar founder Eli Mechlovitz says ceramic and porcelain tiles are pretty popular, but ceramic is a nice natural departure from those options.
“While ceramic and porcelain tiles remain popular across many use cases, Slate resonates with designers and homeowners looking for a natural stone with a raw yet refined character,” Mechlovitz says. “At TileBar, we’ve challenged the notion that slate can only be used for a more industrial look, styling the collection across a variety of spaces, from modern to rustic.”
Slate, Mechlovitz says, is a forgiving material, particularly compared to other natural stones. “It is highly durable, able to be used both indoors and outdoors and has natural slip resistance,” he explains. “Slate will beautifully patina over time, contributing to the natural and organic look. It’s a material with design versatility that works in a number of different spaces, from residential mudrooms and bathrooms to boutique hotels and commercial spaces.”

The slate collection comes in two types of finish: a textured cleft that showcases the natural engraved layers of the material, and a softened, more refined tumbled, which boasts the smooth variations while still showcasing the natural strata and variety in color tones. “While the natural form of slate can have a rough texture, our team evaluated multiple sources to find slate with a softer natural finish, especially for floor tile,” Mechlovitz says. “Within our assortment, Brazilian Black slate is inherently smoothest; a denser material that trends to split into sheets without as much sharpness.”
Here are the characteristics of the collection:

California Gold
Unique among slates, natural oxidation lends the California Gold collection its vibrant palette. A swath of warm golds and rusty browns cover its neutral gray base, creating rich coloring that’s full of character. The collection features two finish types: a fully textured natural cleft and a softened, more refined tumbled, both showcasing the unique variations in shading and thickness that slate is known for. Four sizes and a French pattern are available. California Gold is priced from $6.25 per square foot.

India Black
The India Black collection showcases the simple beauty of slate with a subtle range of cool tones and charcoal hues. This collection features two finish types: a fully textured natural cleft and a softened, more refined tumbled, both of which boast the unique variations in shading and thickness that slate is known for. In a full suite of formats, India Black delivers understated elegance. Five sizes and a French pattern are available. India Black is priced from $7.96 per square foot.

Brazilian Black
The raw beauty of slate, with its velvety black color and refined texture, takes centerstage in the Brazilian Black Slate collection. Sourced from Brazil, high-quality slate is split along its natural layers to reveal a cleft surface that celebrates the stone’s organic formation. These oversized tiles showcase deep charcoal tones and a matte finish that suits an array of design styles from industrial to contemporary. Gauged for consistent thickness, this exceptionally dense and low-maintenance collection is great for indoors and out, even in high-traffic areas. Available in tiles measuring 12 inches by 24 inches and 24 inches by 24 inches. Brazilian Black is priced from $12.95 per square foot.
