Andrew Mann Architecture undertook the ambitious task of revitalizing this century-old Edwardian house that is perched on a hill within a bustling San Francisco neighborhood. The dwelling, now home to a family of four, presented an opportunity for a holistic transformation, blending pragmatic enhancements with an appreciation for the site’s natural features.
The initial impetus was the integration of a much-needed two-car garage, prompting an ambitious lift to the existing structure upward to create parking space and allowing for a meticulous refinement of the front facade, staying true to the character of the period neighborhood.

Additional objectives included expanding living spaces to embrace abundant southern exposure and picturesque views of the surrounding hills, while managing the severe downsloping topography to unlock rear yard access. The architects introduced stepped volumes cascading down from the top floor, creating a seamless connection with the outdoors through a series of decks and balconies.
The rear facade, adorned with trellises and sun shades, became a canvas for modulating light, casting captivating patterns on the interior spaces. A strategically added full basement below the garage level was the solution that created a valuable stepout access to the rear garden, which previously was seldom used.

The design process was deeply influenced by the family’s lifestyle and aspirations. An open layout conducive to entertaining, an infusion of natural light, and a nod to the home’s original charm inherent to this historic Victorian-era neighborhood were paramount considerations. The family’s choice of Andrew Mann Architecture was grounded in the firm’s commitment to quality, meticulous attention to detail, shared aesthetic sensibilities, and a collaborative work style.
As such, the team’s design orchestrated a delicate interplay between traditional front spaces and modern rear areas. A folded-plane stair volume and a thoughtful incorporation of horizontal light penetration ensured a harmonious connection between the living floors. The result was an interior bathed in natural light and simultaneously marked by clean lines and spatial richness.

“For the family, what started as a project centered around a garage addition, blossomed into a comprehensive redesign that seamlessly integrated with their
love for San Francisco’s cultural offerings and outdoor pursuits,” the firm says. “The meticulously designed transformed home stands as a testament to both the fusion of timeless elegance and contemporary living, while also radiating the architectural sophistication that defines [our] work.”
