New Zealand-based design house Resident has introduced a new lighting collection designed by Michael Young, an award-winning British designer, founder, and creative director of Michael Young Studio.
Drift, the brand says, draws inspiration from pebble stones, but floats weightlessly, emitting calm and tranquility.
“Defined by a soft, triangular form, with gentle glowing curves, its presence is serene,” Resident explains in a release announcing the product line. “Behind this simplicity lies a complex structure: a mathematically calibrated design that emits a uniform, ambient light across the entire surface. It’s a quiet technical achievement that elevates Drift beyond conventional lighting.”

Resident, which offers design-focus furniture and lighting products, says Young brings a fresh perspective to its catalog with Drift, “a piece that is light and ethereal, yet grounded in innovative engineering.”
“As simple as it sounds, pebble stone paving—soft stones set into the ground—creates such serenity and calm,” Young explains. “I made a floor of loose stones in my office in Lake Como; it sounds like walking along the beach to get to my desk.”
Young envisions Drift being used in residential and contract environments, as it “creates a sense of visual freedom to exist within an architectural space, one that does not fight against the walls or demand too much of other things.”

Available in two sizes–20 inches and 30 inches wide–and designed for singular or clustered installation, Drift is made from a translucent polymer on PPE structure and features a matte black aluminium ceiling rose. It uses an integrated LED, has a color temperature of 2700K and a CRI of 90.
“Pure, soft and ambient, the Drift Pendant is an organic triangular form that glows with even, diffused light,” Resident says, adding that the piece creates “a sense of calm and tactility, floating serenely as a weightless form.”
